Fly larvae could help recycle food waste, club told
The Rotary Club of Umina Beach has been told that fly larvae could help recycle food waste, so that it did not go to landfill.
"We know that all of that food waste we put into our red bins goes into landfill, but can we do better that this?" asked club president Mr Wayne Dowdle.
The club's meeting earlier this month was addressed by Arc Ento Tech Ltd managing director Mr Ramon Atayde.
Mr Atayde described a process of "using the larvae of the black soldier fly to digest food waste in our garbage", said Mr Dowdle.
"The process can eliminate that waste faster than earth worms and produce high grade insect meal, high nutrient fertilizer, and an innovative industrial reductant which can replace coking coal."
Mr Atayde is pictured addressing the meeting with samples of the by-products of his process alongside him.
Past club president Mr Peter Doherty is pictured thanking Mr Atayde for his address.
